7 weeks with /e/os
7 weeks ago I installed /e/os on my Samsung S7 Edge upgrading the old mobile from 2016 to Android 10. A few major hick ups I could fix quickly fix. How does it feel since then?
I did not encounter any major problems. The open camera app is quite slow upon starting. And it even crashes occasionally when being used by other apps.
The app “Naturalist” has severe performance issues, which may be due to the bad performance of the camera app. But I have not used the app before, therefore it does not count. I do not have a comparison.
“Ebay Kleinanzeigen” has really poor performance. It was always had but on /e/os it is unbearable. I suspect blocked trackers. I had encountered issues before where the app was not working in VPN or with strict add blockers. Unfortunately, the website is not much better, so I guess, I have to skip this service entirely. No problem.
Occasionally, a bad performing app freezes. Sometimes it is a browser, usually it is Ebay Kleinanzeigen. Knowing how to press buttons for enforcing a phone reboot is the solution here. But that rarely happens, especially since the SD card had been formatted.
Only pain point is that Android Auto does not seem to work. I suspect restricted USB access. Unfortunately, I could not find a way to tell /e/os to accept my Ford as usb device.
Streaming Spotify to the car’s audio system through Bluetooth works perfectly, though.
I am very satisfied with /e/os and I even started to use the advanced privacy shield features, faking my information and even installed privacy focused email- and browser apps. Having full control over the apps’ permissions made me more sensitive for the matter.
It feels also good to get a monthly system updates. I had no system updates from Samsung in years. Especially not regularly.
